In 1950, blonde cabinets, chrome hardware, and paisley patterned counter tops were at the leading edge in this kitchen's design. For the 1990's, the combination of the 1950's design finishes and the cabinet layout no longer fit the bill or the taste of this client.

Having a kitchen that catered to the owner's entertainment and cooking style and also accommodated seating of six or more people was the objective of this remodeling project.

The existing cabinets, countertops, built-in appliances, tile back splashes, and plaster soffits were demolished and removed. Additional recessed can light fixtures were installed to define and illuminate the food preparation area. Wall sconces were added at the opposite end of the room to add a casual elegance to the dining area. No more demolition of the interior walls was done than was absolutely necessary, leaving much of the existing plaster intact.

White, wall and base cabinets, accented with crown moulding, and bright brass hardware replaced the old cabinets. A new self-contained, slide-in range with an over the range microwave, a new sink and faucet, a dishwasher, and a new refrigerator was also installed. To provide multi-functional and additional task work surface, a freestanding island was built. The island assists in directing traffic through the kitchen and, with its decorative tulip pendant accent light, serves as a focal point in the newly remodeled space.

To accomplish the additional space necessary in the dining area, wall cabinets and desktop counters were removed from one wall. To make up for the loss of food storage space created by the elimination of these cabinets, an infrequently used "broom closet" was converted to a food storage pantry with adjustable shelving.

A recessed niche was created along the wall, between the stud cavities, to create a special space for the telephone and answering machine. In doing so, it remains accessible but not in the way of traffic through the room.

Low voltage, under cabinet, halogen lighting was installed under the wall cabinets to accentuate the new counter tops and the new ceramic tile back splash that were installed.

To tie the elements of the existing oak table and chairs together with the strong presence of the white cabinetry, oak patterned, laminate flooring was installed along with 2", horizontal wood blinds. The remaining wood trim was painted white to correspond with the new cabinetry.
