"Do you do
roof repair?" asked the voice on the other end of the phone. "Not as a single
line of work however, if it associated as part of a project we would be glad to
help", was the response. "What is the nature of the problem? "I've gone through
my 6th blue tarp, and before I purchase one more I would like to get this roof
fixed once and for all"!
After digging a bit deeper into the circumstances we found that
the client had a flat roof over the rear entry to their home. Above it was an
airing porch of sorts. The railings had rotted away a long time ago, they were
removed and the tin roof had also failed. As a remedial repair, they had been
covering the porch roof with tarps. Inspired by the fact that we were working
next door, they called us from the number on our job site sign. What they were
really looking for was guidance and direction as to what they could do with
this space beyond repairing the leaking roof problem. An appointment was
arranged to evaluate the project.
After extensive discussion, we
learned that they really enjoyed spending time outside in the evenings but were
normally driven inside by the mosquitoes. The plan became abundantly clear at
that point, construct a screened enclosure that matched the rustic Tudor style
of the house over the existing entry, in conjunction with repairing the leaking
roof problem.
Beyond the need to repair the roof a considerable amount of the
soffit and fascia was rotted and in need of replacement. The tin roof, the
decking down to the joists, soffit, and fascia were all stripped off. New
tongue and grooved plywood decking was installed with a rubber membrane roof
installed over the top. Soffit and fascia was installed and restored to
original conditions. A cedar deck was built on top of the new roof and a
vaulted, hip style roof was created on top of that. The eaves and over hangs
precisely match the existing conditions of the house and the 40 year
dimensional roof shingles were matched as well. A removable screen system was
developed, and to match the porch on the front of the house, the vaulted
ceiling of the enclosure was finished with bead board. (Note: the screen system
was removed for photographic detail).
The collar ties of the roof were
wrapped in rough sawn Cedar as a design consideration, a ceiling fan with a
light was installed, and new gutters and downspouts on each of the new roofs
were installed as well.
The clients love their new "outdoor room", and
they didn't have to buy another tarp.
